Long Way Gone: Fishbowl #2

Afternoon!  A few thoughts for today's fishbowl...

I was disappointed by the tone of some of your posts.  Remember that not only are your comments attached to your name, they are also attached to my name and to Arapahoe High School.  This is not a place for aggressive language, and it's certainly not a place for cuss words.  Consider your tone; if people aren't responding to your comments, that reflects on you and should cause you to pause to consider how you might proceed differently so people want to engage in discussion with you.

Because some of you weren't very involved in discussion today, you will lose the opportunity to participate in discussion via the blog.  If this opportunity is important to you, please keep up your end of the bargain.

Happy blogging!

  1. How do you think Ishmael can feel happy again?

    1. I think that Ishmael can be happy again once everything-the war is over because he won't have to worry about whether this will be the last day of his life.

    2. I think the only way Ishmael can feel good again is if he escapes the violence. Violence can have many negative affects including post traumatic stress disorder, and severe depression. So if he were to leave the violence he would be happy again.

  2. Throughout chapters nine and ten, the boys stare death in the face more times than they ever would care to count. How could they recover from their experiences in Sierra Leone?

    1. I don't think that they will ever "recover" from the war. They will never be able to get away from it because it was once a part of their life. They are also constantly reminded by it because of their scars.

    2. I think that their experiences will always be with them but I believe that if they decide to let it go, and live in the moment after the war finishes, they will feel more free too.

    3. I also don't think they can recover from the war simply because it will always be a big part of their life. Also because many of them have lost loved ones due to the war.

    4. I think they try to find the happiness out of life, and make good memories of them.

Saidu talks about how every time they encounter people trying to kill them he closes his eyes and waits for death. As he says how apart of him dies every time he accepts death. Do you think that it is he who literally dies every time or his hope that things will change?

    1. I think it's some of both. Over time, not only does it sap his willingness to carry on for fear of meeting death again, but it seems more and more like the whole world has fallen into darkness and will never resurface.

I think that it is part of his hope that is dying. He is losing hope for being alive, living, and can't take the fear of dying anymore.

    1. Yes, considering what they have been through at this point.

    2. I believe he is. His companions are the only boys close to his age he even knows about. He knows they will continue to protect each other time and time again no matter what happens. They are all in it together, and the boys seem to have grown very close.

  5. what is the symbolism of the chief taking their shows and running them out of town.

    1. It's a small scale version of everything that has happened to them since their village was attacked. They were run out of their own town. The chief took their shoes, symbolic of their lack of supplies, and abandoned them on the beach under the 120 degree sun, symbolic of how they must keep traversing the war-torn landscape of Sierra Leone and slowly dying along the way.

    2. I think that the shoes symbolize war. when you first take of your shoes you don't feel any pain, but after a while the pain becomes unbearable. When war started for Ishmael it didn't really affect him. Now the pain is really starting to hurt him.

If Ishmael is to become happy again it may take a very long time for him to be happy just because he has all these flashbacks from the murders and killings in the streets seeing all these dead people. Eventually he may be happy if he removes himself from the army or something because that will only bring more problems.Even if it is for or not for the right cause.

  7. Is Ishmael concentrating on the story's to escape is reality? Is this a healthy coping mechanism?

All of the 7 boys have all seen and experienced acts of violence. What affects do these acts have on them?

    1. These acts of violence cause the boys to become very unstable and make them take it out on each other sometimes. We went over something like this in class yesterday and showed that the acts of violence can cause multiple reactions.

    2. I think that the boys will slowly go mad. It has also shown that some of the boys are willing to react in violence. Like when saidu talks about chasing the dog and how he wish he would kill them.

    3. Violence can warp people's sanity. If violence is a regular occurrence for you all your life then when it stops psychological problems can occur.

    4. It has a terrible affect on the boys, they are starting to feel that violence is the only way out. They will soon stop trusting each other and they are losing their morals.

  9. Do you think the boys will continue to be brainwashed and not think killing is bad, or will they realize what they are doing is wrong and turn against the army?

    1. I think they will soon realize that what they are doing is not good, but I don't think they will turn against the army but instead will just try and get away and not talk about it.

    2. I think that if they do manage to overcome it, they won't actually turn against the army, but instead run away from it. If they come to terms with what the government or the rebels are forcing them to do, they won't continue violent action. Instead, they will run away from it.

    3. I think that they would stay brain washed and continue to kill cause cause its the only way for them to stay alive and well.

When the boys were invited to go hunting with some of the men from the village, they return and are welcomed with a feast. How do you think they feel at that moment?

    1. I think that there super graceful cause they haven't seen that much food for awhile and just seeing it would make anyone to fell great.

  11. Why do you think ishmale tells the story of how his grandma called him a spider.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Ishmael tells that story simply to get their minds off of all of the turmoil and violence that is taking place in their homeland. He picked that specific story because it's amusing and because it does not make him overly nostalgic.

    2. I think that they feel very grateful for the people at the village, and the way they are very welcoming and aren't afraid of them. Also I believe that they are relieved that they don't have to hunt and struggle for that night.

  12. Do you think Ishmael will see his parents and little brother again?
