Kite Runner Fishbowl #3

Great job with your last discussion.  You guys ask great questions and respond thoughtfully, also being sure to direct your questions and answers.

Remember, this IS a formal writing assignment; make sure to capitalize where appropriate and to use appropriate grammatical and mechanical constructions.

Also, be sure to participate consistently.  The message I receive if you only participate a few times towards the discussion's end, for instance, and haven't been in the open chairs is that you are using the first half of our fishbowl time to check your email and shop online.

  1. Do you think that Amir regret all the things he did or didn't do now that he knows hasaan is his 1/2 brother?

    1. Yes. I think that he looks at his childhood with Hassan a whole lot different and now realizes the things he did to Hassan and wishes he could not have done those things, like for instance... letting Hassan get raped by Assef and not doing anything

    2. I think that he would regret everything more because he thought that Hassan was just his servant, and never thought that Hassan and Amir could be brothers in blood as well as bond. The fact that Hassan was his half brother would add to the guilt once Amir found out. Alternatively, however, Amir may have been rid of some regret because he finds tat Baba is just as bad as him; Baba stole Amir's right to the truth, and Amir stole Baba's oldest friend.

  2. Why does the man in the hotel think Amir is the father?

    1. Why wouldn't the man think that Amir is his father? He is freaking out because a child who could very easily be his son has disappeared. It would be hard to tell that Amir was not Sohrab's father.

      Delete
    2. Because he is caring about Hassan's son as if he was a father.

      Delete
    3. Well when an adult is caring for a child people automatically thinks that they are is mother or father.

    4. But what father characteristics does Amir show to the man?

      Delete
    5. I think that The man mistaked amir for sohrab father was forshadowing that Amir will be sohrab father

  3. Erica- I think Amir regrets what he did, but not just because he found out Hassan was his half brother, but because he was just upset on what he let happen in the alley. Finding out Hassan is his half-brother, only makes his feelings worse

    1. To me, it seems like Amir is doing what he possibly can to take Sohrab to America. At the eng of the chapter, you saw how excited Amir was that there was a chance to tke him with him. I think this is Amir's way making up to Hassan, "A way to be good again"

      Delete
    2. Amir should take him home and raise him as his own kid, especially with the fact that he and his wife cannot produce children at the moment. Also, he should take the kid because his should try to make it up to Hassan.

    3. He essentially has to bring Sohrab home to America. How could he leave Sohrab in an orphanage when he was taken from an orphanage by the Taliban? And where else would Sohrab go? Amir is the closest thing to family that Sohrab will ever have now.

    4. I think that Amir will take Sohrab home with him because he feels it is a way he can give back to Hassan and do something for him so he will be forgiven. Amir is trying to do everything he can to gain forgiveness from Hassan and this is one of the many ways he is trying to be forgiven.

  5. Yes. Knowing that he is his brother might make Amir feel even worse about what he did and didn't do.

    1. i don't think it is necessarily ever allowed because you hurt your family and friends when you do and it is a selfish act becuase you dont think about them.

    2. Anthony- Suicide is never the solution, it's selfish and is devastating to friends and family. No matter how tough life gets, suicide should not be the answer

  7. If you were Amir would you want to be called Sohrab's father?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No because Hassan is his father not Amir.

      Delete
  8. It is never allowed. There is no reason for it. It will make your life better but not the people around you.

  9. Erica:
I think that Amir still does regret the things he did in his past to Hassan. Amir will always regret his actions and he will always try to do everything he can to not feel guilty. Finding out that Hassan is his half brother, it is even worse what he did to him, his own brother. I think he probably feels worse about his past now knowing Hassan is his half brother.

  10. Why does Sohrab decide to talk to Amir all of a sudden about America?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. He wants to leave the place where his dad died. He wants to start fresh.

      Delete
    2. I think that Sohrab wants to see what life is like in America and wants to compare it to life in Afghanistan, also to know where Amir comes from, even though Amir is really from Afghanistan.

      Delete
    3. Because Amir wants Sohrab to have a good childhood, and not have to worry whether he was going to live another day; Somewhere he can feel safe and live happily while he can.

      Delete
  11. It is never allowed. Even though you might thank that you are making things better you are making it worse for everyone.

  12. I think Amir will take Sohrab home because I think he still regrets what he did to Hassan evan after being beaten up by Assef. He still thinks it is his responsibility to take care of Sohrab.

  13. @Class
Do you think that Amir sees Sohrab as his own son? Why or why not?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. no because all in all he is not his son. He might be treated like a son but Amir knows that Sohrabs father is Hasaan and so does Sohrab. I think Amir would feel incredibly guilty if Sohrab called him father becuase he would feel like thats not for him its for hasaan.

      Delete
    2. @Ben
We can infer that Amir does see Sohrab as his own son because he now knows that Hassan and him are 1/2 brothers, or whatever you want to call it, and now that his "Brother" has died he may think that Sohrab is his responsability now.

      Delete
    3. I don't think that amir see's sohrab as his son but he see's him as famly as he saw hassan as a brother before he knew. I don't think Amir can ever see him as a son becasue of the regerate he has. I don't think sohrab will see amir as a father but a portecter

  14. Does the Mosque represent a bigger idea?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, the mosque represents many memories.

      Delete
    2. The Mosque is very important to Sohrab because those are some of the only good memories Sohrab has left from his past.

      Delete
    3. I thought the Mosque conected hassan to shorab because hassan alway had to go out of his way for pray as does shorab

  15. What big connection/bond does Amir have with Sohrab?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The only connection he has is Hassan.

      Delete
  16. I think that Amir sees Sohrab as his own son because he knows there is a part of him in Sohrab: "blood is a powerful thing..." as Rahim Khan said. Amir knows he wants a son and he is happy now that Sohrab is around.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Do you think with all of the actions that Amir has done that he is forgiven? Also do you think Amir has forgave himself?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think that Amir is forgiven but that he still hasn'y forgiven himself because he still dreams of what had happened between him and Assef, them being the same.

      Delete
    2. I don't think that Amir will ever truly forgive himself becuase so many things have been impacted in everyones lives because of it. It didn;t just hurt Hasaan it hurt baba and ali and everyone even though they didn't know what happened because of amirs reprucussions.

      Delete
    3. I almost feel like Rahim Kahn summons Amir back to Afghanistan to help Amir forgive himself. After all, Rahim Kahn said "There is a way to be good again," and not, "You need to be good again."

  18. How far do you think Amir will go trying to get Sohrab to come with him to America?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think that Amir will try everything he can do to get Sohrab to go back to America with him, because he doesn't want Sohrab growing up in Afganistan with all that is going on right now there, and so that Sohrab will have a better childhood

      Delete
    2. I think Amir will do everything he can in order to bring Sohrab to America. Sohrab is a liability to Amir and I think if Amir takes Sohrab he will feel better about what he did to Hassan

      Delete
    3. I think he wont try as hard as you think. When you are a father you want your kids to be happy and support their decisions.

      Delete
    4. I think in the end Sohrab will be almost forced to go to America because so far in the book Sohrab has no say for anything at all.

  19. Does Amir feel as if he has made it up to Hassan by taking Sohrab to the "safer place" or will Amir Take more action?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think Hassan would forgive Amir for what happened between them if he took Sohrab. Hassan taught him to read and write so he didnt grow up illiterate like his father. That shows me Hassan wanted Sohrab to grow up intelligent and live happy. So I think that Hassan wants Sohrab to live a better life, and be safe- like moving to America.

    2. I think that Amir feels like he has not made it up to Hassan because of what he did to Hassan, but is still doing more to try and make it all up to Hassan, and that Amir might never feel like he made it up to Hassan because he is dead and Amir feels like he needs Hassan to tell him that he is forgiven

  20. Amir is a person who is not always there for the people whoa are there for him. Do you think that Amir will truly be there for Sohrab and take care of him if he takes him home with him? Will the past from Hassan come back to Amir and will he treat Sohrab the same way he treated Hassan?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The only person who is left that needs to forgive Amir is himself. Could Amir ever forgive himself for his treatment of Hassan if he treats his son the same way?

      Delete
    2. I agree with you David, Amir needs to forgive himself for what he did. Hassan forgave him a long time ago but he does not truly know that. He know what he did was wrong and needs to move on from his past.

      Delete
    3. Amir won't treat Sohrab like he did Hassan because he has learned from his mistakes and past choices.

      Delete
  21. i think Amir will never treat Sohrab or anyone the way he treated Hassan because he is not the same person anymore but he still needs to forgive himself.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That could be because he is still trying to find forgiveness.

      Delete
  22. I don't think that Amir will treat Sohrab like Hassan because he will have learned from his past.

    1. I think that amir has matured and grown up and will treat sohrab like his sun because I belive he has lernd from his past

  23. Why do you think Baba hid Amir's and Hassan's brotherhood from the world?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The reason is simple: ethnicity. Hassan was half Hazara, and Baba was a pureblood Pashtun. Baba's fatherhood of Hassan was not socially acceptable, and so he had to hide that dark truth from the world to stay accepted in his world. I believe that perhaps a deeper question is this: Why did Ali hide the brotherhood between Amir and Hassan from the world?

      Delete
  24. Do you think baba didn't come out about Hassan because of his friendship with Ali or because he was assumed of him self

    ReplyDelete
  25. Why would Sohrab want to stay where he is?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Maybe because he feels like this is his home and he wants to grow up there, like his father Hassan

      Delete
    2. I think that Sohrab feel that if he stays everything will be normal again, he will have his father and mother. that's what most children don't understand about people they love dying, they think everything will be normal again by staying where they are.

  26. Why do you think Amir dreams of him and Assef being similar?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think Amir dreams of him and Assef being similar, because they both hurt Hassan in different ways. Amir betrayed Hassan whereas Assef beat him up.
