The Kite Runner: Fishbowl #1 chapter 12

If you are choosing to participate via comments on our class blog today, be sure you adhere to the same discussion expectations you would if you were in the inner circle:  respectfully challenging your classmates' thinking, basing your assertions on textual evidence, etc.

There is not a finite number of times you need to contribute; rather, I will check to see that you are thoughtfully and consististently contributing.  If you wait to post until 20 minutes into our fishbowl or you post once and are dormant for 15 minutes, that indicates that you're not using your time thoughtfully. If this is because you're a slow typist or perhaps you struggle with the muti-tasking nature of this method of capturing your thinking, choose another way to show your understanding . If lack of focus continues to be a problem, you will be asked to hand-write a response to our next fishbowl or to verbally participate only.

A couple of things to keep in mind :
  • This is an academic assignment.  It should be properly written and proofread rather than assuming the appearance of a text message.
  • If addressing one person's post, name that person, i.e. "Fred, in response to your question..."
Blog away!

  10. @ Madison S.
I think that since they have moved to America their relationship has been a lot stronger. I believe it is stronger because they are all each other have and have to stick together. But their relationship is also weak because when it comes to important stuff like when Baba doesn't tell Amir that he is sick. So I agree their relationship is stronger and still weak at the same time.

  11. I think because it was the perfect chance for Amir to get rid of the Hassan and Baba problem for good. That is why he didn't tell why he put the watch there, the opportunity was to good for him to resist.

  12. Responding to your question Madison, I think one thing that connects Amir and Baba is their life before America. The two understand each other unlike other people they talk to. Something that makes the relationship weak, is Baba and Amir don't have many connections. Instead, Baba is more like Hassan, which causes jealousy in Amir making him distant from his father

  13. Why do you think Amir is to afraid to tell any about hasan Insedent

    ReplyDelete
  14. @ Isabel
No Amir has not told Baba about the incident yet.

  15. Madison : I think his relationship is strong with baba because he loves him and cares for him so much, but then again , amir and baba have so many differences that it is so hard for them to get together.

  16. Our past and the decisions we made in the past shape who we are. When we do something wrong in our past, it makes us want to make it up in the future. But that is not how Amir is. He knows he did the wrong thing in when he was younger, yet her does nothing to fix it.

  17. Baba is afraid of weakness. For example, He doesn't want to get treatment because he would be weak in front of all his friends.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Kevin, I think Amir is afraid to tell anyone about the Hassan incident is because he wants to cover up his past, and try to move on from his old sinful life.

  19. Does Baba get embarrassed by Amir?

I believe that he is still a bit ashamed of Amir as he has been his entire life. Now, after the kite contest, it is just less noticeable by Amir because it is a more subtle way in which Baba is showing it.

  20. Do you think it startled Amir when Baba said that he wishes Hassan was there with them at Amir's party/get together?

    ReplyDelete
  21. @ KevinK
To answer your question,I think Amir is just affraid of what he witnessed that day and also he doesn't want people yelling at him for doing nothing

    ReplyDelete
  22. Matt: Amir has to make a good impression on the father of the girl so he can get his blessing to marry her, as well make a good impression on everyone else and not be hiding behind everyone else.

  23. Unless Hassan has been killed.

  24. If Baba is in his death bed in the future, will Amir tell his secret to his almost dead father?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Also baba was so used to being known all around the middle east and e gets to america and the first thing is he's got cancer. He doesn't want to be known as a weak man who is fighting cancer but getting help with therapy. he thinks he needs to fight it off like a man..

    ReplyDelete
  26. @Michelle
I think that Baba is still embarrassed by Amir. But I think that Baba just cares so much about his reputation that anything that be littles his reputation he takes offense to. Which is the reason why he tells Amir not to tell anyone about his illness.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Michelle: I think that when Amir was little Baba was embarrassed of him and that was part of the reason why he has such a strange a attitude towards Amir. I feel like Baba thinks he is too good for Amir.

    ReplyDelete
  28. @ Angelo
I think that it did startle Amir when Baba said that he wished Hassan was there because in the beginning of the book Amir was trying to get rid of Hassan and get Baba's love for him, and now that Hassan isn't there, Amir thinks that Hassan doesn't really exist to him anymore

    ReplyDelete
  29. @KevinK2015 Probably because he knows he regrets not sticking up for Hassan and doesn't need to hear from other people how "bad" of a person he is. I think he especially won't tell Baba because Hassan had told ALi and that's the reason they left. Ali was Baba's best friend for a long time and if he ever found out he would never forgive Hassan. Plus, he is going through a rough time right now with his cancer, so that would be too much for him.

  30. Do you think the general apporves of the marige or respect's baba's wishes to much to say no

    ReplyDelete
  31. Why is Amir so determined to tell no one about what had happened, is he ashamed or just afraid he will not be loved any more by any one ?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Amir is definitely ashamed of himself because he was a bad child in his past and he never did the right thing.

    2. @ isabel k Amir has never been turly loved by baba and he's afraid to loss anything he has left. Also amir doesn't realy fell like anyone loves him so he doesen't whant to loss any love he has left. So I think amir is afraid of not being loved.

      Delete
    3. But is he not telling any one because he is afraid of being forgotten, or like does he not care if Baba or Rahim Khan get mad at him for not helping Hassan?

      Delete
    4. I agree with Matt, Amir seems like he is ashamed for what he has done instead of stepping in and helping his friend who has been there for him his entire life and then when given the oppportunity to return the favor and he doesn't.

      Delete
  32. Matt: I think Amir will tell his father about the incident because Amir knows Baba won't be able to reveal to the public about his mistake.

  33. In class we talked about how Amir and Baba have adapted to the lifestyle in America. Do you think that General Taheri and his family has adapted?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Once they had moved to America Baba and Amir seem to have grown closer in many ways but in other ways they seemed to grow further and further apart. They have gotten closer in a plethora of ways such as they run errands together such as going to the market and buying goods and then reselling them for a higher price and running the stand and such. But on the other hand he also seems to get more and more annoyed with some of the things that Amir does such as when he snapped when Amir asked him another question.

    ReplyDelete
  35. @ Isabel
I think that he doesn't tell anyone about what happened to Hassan because even though it doesn't look like it but I believe that Amir also cares about his reputation. And if people were to find out about what happened then his reputation will be destroyed along with Baba's for he is his son.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Kevin: I think that Amir does not tell anyone abut Hassan's incident because he is afraid that if he tells people they will judge him for not doing the right thing by protecting Hassan. He realizes now that what he did was wrong and he is ashamed for not being a good friend to Hassan. How would you tell someone that kind of thing? "My best friend was raped right in front of me and I just ran away like a coward."

    ReplyDelete
  37. Why is Amir afraid of being judged for his actions?

    1. As of this point in the book, Amir cares a lot about his self image and at this point of the book he is respected by others. If he would tell his secret there would be no respect for him.

  38. @ Kevin
I completely agree with you. I believe that the general has to much respect for Baba to refuse him. Also the fact that Baba is very ill and has gone out of his way to do so plays a huge role in his decision to give him his approval.

  39. So far, does Amir regret anything he has done in his life?

  40. Does your past control the total outcome of your life

    ReplyDelete

    1. I partially agree with that. It may not be the outcome of your life but it can certainly make you who you are and what you have become.

  41. The general respects baba so much and also baba is sick and who can refuse to a sick person like if someone has cancer like baba i would't refuse to something like that..

  42. Sorraya's mom seems very nice and welcoming to Amir. Do you think that maybe Sorraya has talked to her mom about Amir which is why she kind of smiles when she sees the two of them talking?

    1. I think soraya mom pushed soraya tords amir and whants her to be happy but with only asuming

    2. I see what youre saying but it seems as if it were the other way around at times because sonrraya's shady signals dont give a clear outcome so it might have been her mom saying Amir is a good kid and thus.

  43. Kevin : very good question, it depends on if you want it to. you control your life not others..

  44. Can you bury your past from others?

  45. @ Kevin
I think that past has an impact on your life. The size of that impact depends on how you deal with your past.

  46. Ben: You can bury your past from others, but only for a certain amount of time until you break and tell someone.
