Fishbowl #3: pg 21 ("into the rain")-end of section 1

Hi Bloggers!

A few thoughts going into our fishbowl today...

Firstly, what a huge improvement from last time!  Great questions and thoughtful text-based responses.  Ideas suggested excellent critical thinking.

A few suggestions for today:

  • Be sure you're continually refreshing your page.  I think this is partly why we have many responses for some questions and only 1 or 2 for others.
  • Along those same lines, when many people have responded to a question, choose or pose another one to further discussion so we don't get stuck in a discussion rut.
  • Stay active.  Silences of 5 or 10 minutes suggest unfocused behavior to me.
  • Be sure to use proper grammar and mechanics in your response and to proofread your work.
Happy posting!

  1. Why did Montag decide to take the book?

    1. He was curious. He wanted to know what people saw in books, and why an old woman would give her life for them.

    2. I think that after the women killing herself. He has become very curious about books and wants to know what is so special about them that a women would give her life for.

  2. After Mildred and Montag have a brief talk about her over dosing. Montag realizes that him and Mildred have kind of grown apart. What has caused this?

    1. Montag has changed as a person after seeing this woman kill herself with her books. I think this is a big part why he has been seeing things in a different light lately.

    2. It seems to be caused by simply Montag himself. Mildred is obsessed with her parlor 'family', and Montag has gained interest in what books contain. Their viewpoints are conflicting. Montag is appalled by things like the medical snake that saved Mildred from her overdose. Mildred is fascinated by technology and wants to be what this society calls 'happy'.

    3. Like what Matt said this far in the book a lot of people have changes in great amounts, but the reason they have grown apart may be because of Montag's new obsession which is figuring out about books and wanting to read them makes him think more and hew does not speak to Mildred as much as he should, this also goes along with the suicide by the lady changed his view of things

  3. What do you think about Mildred?

    1. I think of Mildred is an average person in their society. She follows all of the rules and never questions anything like Clarrise and Montag do.

    2. I think Mildred represents how dull the lives of most of the people in their community are, and how any type of change from the normal system will rock their worlds. I also think Mildred has become very materialistic and in turn more selfish.

  4. It is unclear what happens to Clarisse in this section, but she is obviously intentionally removed from the text. Why would Bradbury inexplicably remove this character? What would this suggest about this society?

    1. Maybe to keep reading the book and keep us interested because we want to know what happened to Clarisse.

    2. I think the author wanted to just use one character in order to show that we each need to make our own decisions on what we believe in. The input of Clarisse helped Montag decide what was wrong in his life, but in the end, Montag had to make his own decisions on how to live his life.

    3. But it doesn't appear to be explained. Also, Bradbury doesn't make such a big deal of it. The first time it was mentioned, I missed it, and didn't see it until Beatty's lengthy speech. If that was the purpose, I think he would have had a part where Montag went to her funeral or something. It just doesn't seem like a big enough of a deal to try to keep a reader interested.

  5. What is the authors view of technology up to this point?

    1. I think the author is fine with technology but not ok with people using technology as a crutch in stead of living life.

    2. Technology is fine with the author i believe but it could represent the distractions from the real world that everyone has just like when Mildred says that she wants a tv on th fourth wall. As if three walls of TVs were not enough.

  6. when do you think our government has the right to impose censorship on any type of media and where do you draw the line?

    1. when they think the media is gonna effect the way the people think or if the media is going to change the way people are going to act. Or if the government fidns the media is going against the laws.

    2. I don't think the government should impose any kind of censorship. People should be able to do what they want to an extent of violence.

    3. I think that the only reason to censor media is to keep people safe. Little kids are not allowed to watch R rated movies because it can have an unsafe impact on their lives.

  7. Do you think Beatty has given this giant speech before?

    1. I think Beatty thought about giving this speach but was to much of a coward to do it, I think he's had this speach ready but hasn't said it to any one but montag.

    2. I think that Beatty's fluency throughout the speech shows that he has used this speech before. Somewhere in the chapter, he also mentions how every firefighter has once had the urge to read the books instead of burning them. This also suggests that he has talked to other firemen about the topic.

  8. Do you think montage was all way's questioning the firefighter way and why?

    1. No, I feel that he used to just think it was just a job, but now that he is thinking more about everything he is questioning the job and actions?

    2. No, he thinks that it is normal duty. He has not seen an opposing force since he met Clarisse.

  9. I don't know what they should sensor but I think that if the information that they are censoring can hurt or harm civilians. Then that is were you draw the line.

  10. Do you think the government should view all media before it is aired or revealed, instead of letting it be shown then banding it, and why?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I personally think that the government shouldn't be allowed to ban anything we should just let people make their own judgment call.

      Delete
    2. I honestly don't know because if they had this capability. Then they could lead us to believe things that aren't true. Especially if they were able to censor everything on the internet, TV, radio, etc.

  11. Is Montag going to burn his books or is he going to rebel and hide them.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think he is gonna hide them, because why would he take the books to his house if he was just gonna burn them? He could have just burned the books right there.

      Delete
    2. If he burned them, the book would kind of be anticlimactic. Just saying.
Anyway, it looks like he's just looking for a reason to hide the books and rebel, but he's afraid, and he can't find anything in the books by himself. If he can't find what he's looking for, he's going to burn them.

  12. Beatty seems like a man who knows his stuff and history about the books and the firemen. Do you think that Beatty is 100 percent truthful with the information he shares with Montag?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think Beatty is untruthful so he can scare Montag into coming back to his old ways.

      Delete
    2. He seems truthful, but he is playing his words extremely cleverly. He is easily telling the truth, but in a manner that glorifies the cause of book burning, and he's also not telling both sides of the story. It is the truth, alright, but only an extremely biased and one-sided account.

      Delete
    3. i don't think he is 100 percent truthful because there aren't many books to back him up and what he is saying, so only he would know if he was lieing or not.

      Delete
  13. Do you think that Montag has changed his ways and if so why or why not?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. At the end we found out that Montag has been hiding dozens of book in this house. This makes me think he has always been curious about books but he has never acted up because he has had no motivation. I think his motivation now is Clarrise.

  14. If books have been destroyed for quite some time how literate are people have this society? How well do they comprehend the text that they read?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's shown that the skill has deteriorated to the point of inability to find a hidden meaning. If something is not incredibly straightforward and decisive, then it just goes right over their heads. They can't find the deeper level of text anymore because they're not exposed to it.

  15. Do you think that Mildred will reveal Montag's secret?

    1. I think that mildred will if she can get free clean. But i do think she would back stab montag if she has an opertunity.

      Delete
    2. It seems to me like she just doesn't care. She'll do more to convince Montag to stop trying than she will to get rid of the books.
